Peace III Programme
Building positive relations at a local level
ArtsEkta were awarded a contract by Belfast City Council's Tourism, Culture & Arts Unit under the Peace III programme for an enhanced development and outreach project entitled 'Belfast Suitcase Stories'
Belfast Suitcase Stories will build upon almost four years of previous work by ArtsEkta and partners funded by Belfast City Council through Peace III under the Developing Shared Cultural Space priority. It is a highly unique artistic project that will bring together a group of the city’s younger and older citizens to explore and celebrate the great social diversity of the new, multicultural Belfast. It will enable both a physical and social legacy to merge. Over the course of several months, the participants will come together across a series of artistic workshops to explore the nuances of their own identities, and where those identities fit into the new multicultural tapestry of the city, and its people.
Each ‘Suitcase Story’ represents a reflection of a life shared between different cultures and places, the story of how the participants have come to bridge their own cultural and civic identities, the story of their memories of the past and their hopes for the future. The suitcases themselves represent not just physical journeys, but also the inner journeys that the participants have travelled – their experiences and perspectives of inclusion and integration into the city and its way of life. As Belfast matures into a truly intercultural city, the exhibition will include a variety of artistic pieces that reflect the perspectives of a wide spectrum of communities
This programme is currently live and will end in September 2013
CITY OF FESTIVALS
ArtsEkta regularly receives funding and contracts from other council-administered Peace III schemes to contribute to the development of positive relations at a local level.
Recently we were awarded an audience development contract by Belfast City Council Tourism, Culture & Arts Unit which aims to connect an outreach programme targeting young people and women to our three annual festivals Belfast Mela, Diwali & Samhain and Festival of Colours.
This programme is currently live and will end in June 2013
NORTH DOWN CLUSTER PROGRAMME
ArtsEkta received funding from European Regional Development Fund to deliver an outreach programme in schools in the North Down cluster region (North Down, Ards & Down districts areas) addressing issues of racism and cultural diversity.
The programme, which is an adaptation of ArtsEkta’s Cultural Coach programme, involves a series of hand-on workshops with highly experience facilitators and artists from different ethnic backgrounds. Workshops include dances, music and visual arts and crafts from around the world, with the aim of facilitating safe and shared dialogue in an environment of mutual understanding.
This programme is fully funded by the European Regional Development Fund. There is no artistic or material cost involved for schools or community groups. However, ArtsEkta will welcome some contributions from groups in order to help towards the long-term continuity of the programme in the region
This programme has now ended.
