This week the search has begun for performers who think they have something special to bring to one of Belfast’s most colourful event this year.  Whether you’re a one man band (figuratively or literally) or part of a group of performers, there could be an opening for you in a Parade and City Hall celebration that, together,  promise to give Belfast a day to remember on Saturday 18 June.

Even if you feel too shy to parade, your creative talents could still be in demand, for behind the glitz, the Parade relies on the efforts and enthusiasm of a vast, varied and hugely creative back up team.

Nisha Tandon, Director of ArtsEkta, who are creative partners for the event, says, “The Lord Mayor’s Parade is continually evolving in a bid to keep it fresh and entertaining for everyone but we feel that being part of the show – in whatever capacity - is the most exciting way to enjoy the day.   So this year we’re focusing on helping as many people as possible get involved in this mega multi-cultural celebration".

“We are looking for both established and up and coming performers who can not only add a dash of spectacle and showbiz on the day but who may, in addition, be willing to share their creative skills and vision with others".

Special classes and workshops will take place in every corner of the city, sharpening existing talents within the community and providing the opportunity to acquire new skills. From first taste experiences for tiny tots to master classes for those who are already accomplished in their chosen field – there will be tuition and opportunity for everyone.  But the event organisers are still on the lookout for more tutors and instructors.

Nisha also added, “We’re looking for people who have great skills and are prepared to share them.  Of course we will be looking for those with experience in teaching or running arts workshops but our ‘People’s Parade’ will require all sorts of creativity, and we are hoping to combine Belfast’s great cultural talents with its fabulous legacy of practical skills.  We know for example that the city has more than its fair share of talented woodworkers, painters and seamstresses, and we would love them to pass on their skills to others.  Together, we can add ‘shared skills’ to achieve our ambition for ‘shared space in a shared city.’”
